Windows 11 Home and Pro share the same core Windows experience. The difference is not that Pro is automatically better for everyone; it adds specific security, remote access, virtualization and device-management tools that some users genuinely need.
Choose Home for everyday computing, school and gaming when you do not need advanced management tools. Choose Pro if you specifically need features such as BitLocker Drive Encryption, hosting Remote Desktop sessions, Hyper-V, Group Policy or joining a business domain or Microsoft Entra ID.
Windows 11 Home vs Pro: the practical differences
Start with the feature you plan to use, not the edition name. The table below focuses on the differences most likely to matter before purchase.
| Feature or use | Windows 11 Home | Windows 11 Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday apps, school and browsing | Yes | Yes |
| Windows Security and firewall protection | Included | Included |
| Windows Hello on compatible hardware | Included | Included |

Some features require compatible hardware, configuration or a business service. Feature availability can vary by device and region; check Microsoft’s current comparison for your intended setup.
How to check which Windows edition you have
Use Activation settings
Select Start → Settings → System → Activation. The installed Windows edition appears near the top of the page beside the Windows logo.
Alternatively, open Settings → System → About and look under Windows specifications. Note the full edition name before purchasing a key or upgrade.
This check matters during activation too: Microsoft states that the Windows edition must match the license. If you are already setting up a new license, follow our step-by-step Windows 11 activation guide.
Who should choose Windows 11 Home?
Home is the sensible choice for most personal PCs. Microsoft describes it as suitable for everyday use, school and gaming. It includes the familiar Windows 11 interface, built-in security and the core app and gaming experience.
- You browse, study, stream and use ordinary desktop applications.
- You play PC games and do not need business management features.
- You do not plan to host Remote Desktop sessions or use Hyper-V.
- You do not need to join the PC to an organization’s domain or manage it with Group Policy.
If none of the Pro-only features solves a specific need for you, paying for Pro solely because of its name is unnecessary.
Who should choose Windows 11 Pro?
Pro is intended for users and organizations that need additional control over devices, data and remote access. It is particularly relevant for business PCs, advanced home workstations and technical users.
BitLocker for drive encryption
Pro includes BitLocker Drive Encryption and BitLocker To Go for protecting supported internal and removable drives. Keep recovery keys stored safely; encryption is only useful if you can also recover access when needed.
Remote Desktop hosting
Choose Pro if the PC itself needs to accept incoming Remote Desktop connections so you can access its desktop, files and apps remotely. This is different from simply connecting from your PC to another remote computer.
Hyper-V for virtual machines
Pro includes Client Hyper-V on compatible hardware. This is useful when you need to run isolated virtual machines for development, testing or another operating system. Virtualization support and hardware requirements still apply.
Business networking and management
Pro adds Group Policy, Domain Join and Microsoft Entra ID support for managed environments. These features matter when an organization needs centralized policies and identity management; they offer little benefit to an unmanaged home PC.
Is Windows 11 Pro better for gaming?
Not by default. Both editions provide the core Windows 11 gaming experience, and supported gaming features depend on the game and hardware. Pro does not automatically increase frame rates or make a PC faster. Choose it for gaming only when you also need its additional tools.
How to upgrade from Windows 11 Home to Pro
Microsoft’s manual upgrade steps apply to a device running an activated copy of Windows 11 Home. If Home is not activated, Microsoft recommends activating it first. Back up important files before making system changes.
If you already have a Windows 11 Pro product key
Open Settings → System → Activation, select Change beside Change product key, enter the 25-character Pro key and select Next to begin the upgrade.
If you need to buy the upgrade through Microsoft
On the Activation page, expand Upgrade your edition of Windows and select Open Store. Follow the Microsoft Store instructions and restart the device when prompted.
After the upgrade, return to Settings → System → Activation to confirm both the Pro edition and activation state. If Windows shows an error, note the exact code and consult our activation troubleshooting guide.
Before buying a Windows license
- Confirm the edition currently installed and the edition you want to use.
- Identify the specific Pro feature you need before paying for an upgrade.
- Read the product’s device limit, activation method, delivery details and support terms.
- Check whether the offer is an edition upgrade or a full license, and whether it matches your situation.
- Understand the license channel and transfer terms; our Retail vs OEM guide explains what to check.
