Office 2021 vs Microsoft 365: which should you choose?

Understand the real differences in support, updates, devices, cloud services and payment—and why the end of Office 2021 support changes the buying decision.

Office 2021 and Microsoft 365 both provide familiar Office apps, but they are not simply two payment options for the same product. One is a fixed, older release whose support has ended; the other is a subscription with ongoing updates and plan-dependent services.

Quick answer

For most new buyers, Microsoft 365 is the more suitable choice if you want current features, security updates, cloud services and use across multiple devices. If you specifically prefer a one-time purchase for one computer, consider the newer Office 2024 instead of Office 2021. Office 2021 support and security updates ended on 13 October 2026.

The exact apps and benefits depend on the edition or subscription plan. This table focuses on the differences that matter most when choosing between Office 2021 and a consumer Microsoft 365 plan.

What Office 2021 end of support means

Microsoft’s lifecycle page lists 13 October 2026 as the end of Office 2021 support. From that date, Office 2021 no longer receives security updates. This is the most important fact in the comparison for anyone buying today.

A one-time or perpetual license describes the right to use that version under its license terms; it does not mean permanent technical support or permanent security updates. Existing apps may continue to open, but continuing to use unsupported software can increase security risk, especially when opening documents from other people or the internet.

Already using Office 2021?

Back up important documents and plan a move to a supported version. You do not need to delete your files to change Office versions, but you should confirm compatibility and follow Microsoft’s installation guidance before migrating.

Who should choose Microsoft 365?

Microsoft 365 is designed for people who want more than a fixed set of desktop apps. It combines Office apps with ongoing updates and services whose exact availability depends on the plan.

  • You want current features and security updates rather than a fixed older release.
  • You move between a PC, Mac, phone or tablet and want a plan that supports multiple devices.
  • You want OneDrive storage, sharing and other connected services included with an eligible plan.
  • Several people in your household each need their own apps, account and storage allowance.
  • You are comfortable with a recurring subscription and will use the included benefits.

Personal or Family?

Microsoft 365 Personal is intended for one person. Microsoft 365 Family is intended for sharing with up to six people, with device and service allowances defined by the current plan. Choose based on the number of people—not merely on the number of computers.

Prefer to pay once? Look at Office 2024

Office 2024 is the newer one-time-purchase generation. Microsoft explains that you pay an upfront cost for Office apps on one computer, while moving to the next major release requires another purchase. It suits users who value a fixed version and do not need the subscription’s ongoing features or bundled cloud benefits.

Do not assume every Office 2024 edition contains the same applications. For example, Microsoft’s consumer Office Home 2024 and professional editions have different app lists and usage terms. Review the exact Office 2024 Pro Plus product details, platform, device limit and activation terms before ordering.

Does Office 2021 still make sense for a new purchase?

For most connected home or business PCs, Office 2021 is no longer a sensible default recommendation because security updates have ended. A lower upfront price does not remove that limitation.

It remains a legacy product that some existing users may encounter on older systems, but compatibility or a familiar interface should not be confused with ongoing support. For a new purchase, compare a supported Microsoft 365 plan with a current one-time-purchase release instead. The AwalSpace Office 2021 listing is explicitly marked Legacy so its status is clear.

Can you use Office without internet?

Yes, installed desktop apps such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint can be used without a continuous internet connection. Internet access is required for installation and activation, and Microsoft 365 also relies on connectivity for updates, subscription checks and cloud features.

Working offline does not require choosing an unsupported version. A current one-time-purchase Office release or the desktop apps in an eligible Microsoft 365 plan can both support offline document work; the difference lies in the licensing, updates and connected services.

How to compare cost without making the wrong choice

Compare the total value over the period you expect to use the software. A one-time purchase has an upfront cost but does not include an automatic upgrade to the next major release. A subscription has recurring payments but can include ongoing updates, cloud storage and use on more devices.

Include support and security in the calculation. The cheapest unsupported license is not equivalent to a supported product, and a larger subscription is unnecessary if you will not use its additional people, devices or services.

A simple decision checklist

  • One person, current apps and connected services: review Microsoft 365 Personal.
  • A household of up to six people: review Microsoft 365 Family and its current sharing terms.
  • One computer and a firm preference for one-time payment: review a current Office 2024 edition.
  • Office 2021 on an existing PC: plan an upgrade to a supported option.
